Boise (along with Valley and Boise Counties) will host the 2009 World Winter Special Olympics Games. More than 2,500 athletes from over 85 countries will participate.
A number of recreational opportunities are available, including extensive hiking and biking in the foothills to the immediate north of downtown and an extensive urban trail system called the Boise River Greenbelt that runs along the river. Fall is in the air! Enjoy the change in season with fall programs offered by Boise Parks & Recreation. Take a golf lesson, ride a mountain bike, learn to paint, go on a nature hike, visit the zoo, or try hip hop dance.
Some new activities offered this fall include:
• Storybook ballet - A movement class for kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade
• Yoga party - An introduction to yoga poses and exercises for third- through sixth-graders
• Creative drama - Open to children age 4-6, this class uses drama techniques to promote dramatic thinking and creativity
• Women’s self defense - Adults can learn the skills it takes to prevent, escape and protect yourself against an attacker
Several classes are offered at Boise Parks & Recreation’s new school-based community centers located at Grace Jordan Elementary School, 6411 W. Fairfield Ave., and Morley Nelson Elementary School, 7701 W. Northview St. |

Idaho IceWorld hosts Pepsi Free Skate Day Aug 23 |

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 18, 2008 Celebrate the end of summer and the start of this year’s skating season from 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at Pepsi Free Skate Day and Break the Ice, a customer appreciation event and fall season registration party at Idaho IceWorld, 7072 S. Eisenman Road.
Pepsi Free Skate Day is a free event for the entire family. Special features include games, giveaways and free Pepsi products at IceWorld's Blimpie's restaurant as well as free skating and skate rentals. Idaho Steelheads players will be available to sign autographs and talk about this year's schedule.
At Break the Ice, you can register for the various programs Ice World has to offer this fall. Learn to skate classes are available for children age 3 and older. Hockey leagues for kids and adults run from September-March. Figure skating classes in jumps and spins, intro to dance, beginners hockey for adults and other activities are scheduled this season.
Idaho IceWorld features two NHL regulation-size ice rinks, a game arcade, a large multi-purpose room, two restaurants and a skating equipment cleaning service. Ice World was just named a winner in the 2008 Nickelodeon Parents Pick awards for "best indoor playspace." |
